✠ ENTRY X

A steady theme-deep-work day

Phase 32 landed three of its parts (Harvest's REAP now erodes max HP, Bulwark's RIPOSTE scales past its printed floor, Akrasia gets a DEBT ledger that pays GUARD while FALLEN), SWAY's capitulation became a real accept/continue choice instead of an automatic outcome, hand size dropped to 5 with a keep-hand round boundary, and the Charm/Grace wording audit closed out. Breadth checks and deploy gate both green; one process gap filed — phase-mirror issues aren't closing reliably.

MECHANICS

Phase 32 parts 1-3 — Theme Deep Work

What changed

three Gate-2 theme slices shipped back to back. Harvest: reap_all now erodes the enemy's max HP by the same burst it already deals as current-HP damage, and the small reap verb gains a new cost-derived erosion of its own (previously zero current-HP damage) — both additive, so the shipped win-rate curve needed no re-tune. Bulwark: RIPOSTE's counter is now max(printed damage, prevented-blow size) scaled by the enemy's damage-taken multiplier, so blocking a bigger threat pays a bigger counter instead of a flat number. Akrasia: a new per-combat DEBT ledger tracks blood paid via RECOIL only (both FREE-line and PAID paths, plus fate.recoilHp); every 6 HP of debt pays 1 GUARD back while FALLEN.

Why it changed

closes build-plan Phase 32 parts 1-3 (issue #83) — Harvest, Bulwark, and Akrasia each get a mechanic no other theme touches, per the phase brief's Gate-2 deep-work goal. Cross-combat Soul persistence, DEBT cash-out/reset semantics, and the Absolution fork are explicitly deferred to follow-up parts rather than silently decided.

MECHANICS

SWAY capitulation becomes a real choice; damage receipts get truthful

What changed

reaching an enemy's SWAY resolve threshold no longer ends the fight automatically — it opens an explicit ACCEPT / CONTINUE choice (wired into both the CLI's interactive and auto loops), matching how the mercy/exploit choice already works. buildCombatSummary's attribution now folds in any enemy healing the log recorded before computing direct-damage share, so the post-fight receipt can't silently overstate DoT's cut. Keyword atlas, spec-32 card-library text, and the card editor's SWAY blurb were all reworded to describe the choice instead of the old auto-CAPITULATE language.

Why it changed

the old auto-capitulate behavior was already stale — the mercy/exploit choice pattern this now matches shipped first, and the copy across three surfaces (atlas, spec, editor) still described the retired behavior.

Keep-hand rule — hand size 5, round boundary refills instead of redrawing

What changed

COMBAT_HAND_SIZE dropped 6→5, and the round boundary no longer discards the hand and draws fresh — unplayed cards are kept and the hand refills up to target, so holding a dead card now costs real draw room until it's played or scrapped. Bonus-draw riders raise the refill target instead of riding a full redraw; the WS2.1 one-use law is unchanged (an unplayed CONJURED Thoughtform still evaporates at the boundary). A new regression test witnesses the boundary directly: held uids survive, and the refill draws exactly the gap back up to 5.

Why it changed

the old fresh-hand redraw was quietly wiping seed-payoff arcs players spent cards building — diagnosed in the 2026-07-13 spell-grammar brainstorm (braindumped alongside this change), which also flagged FREE-line seed monotony and thin enchant/curse density as follow-on design directions.

Charm library wording audit closes out

What changed

finished the Charm-theme card-face wording pass — Grace preset cards and the remaining Charm-library cards now read consistently with the rest of the 2026-07-12/13 clarity audit. Alongside it, plan/tuning/preset-rework-status.md now classifies all ten shipped presets into audited / player-audited / planned / untouched, with a standing queue rule: one preset gets one active rework plan at a time (Grace is it; Oratory's historical baseline must be reproduced before any new plan starts there).

Why it changed

keeps the preset-tuning queue legible now that Grace's plan is live, and stops "wording audit" from being tracked only in scattered commit messages.

Build-plan queue (plan/steps/01_build_plan.md): Phase 32 (Theme Deep Work) has parts 1-3 of its brief shipped, Part 1b (Souls cross-combat persistence) and Part 4 remain; issue #83 correctly stays open per the multi-part convention. Phases 33-34 pending, no [blocked:] rows. plan/AUDIT.md: 9 pending before this pass, now 10 — filed a new [2.4] row on phase-mirror issues not closing reliably (see Needs you). plan/CRITIQUE.md: unchanged at 28 pending (last pass 2026-07-10, commit 3dc27d24, 96 commits back) — /march's critique gate correctly stayed closed this window; condition 3 ("no pending HIGH critique already queued") is false with 8 HIGH rows still in the backlog, so this is the gate working as designed, not starvation. plan/PHASE_CANDIDATES.md: 14 pending, 0 promoted (/expand pass count still 0 — expected, /march ships pending phases before /expand ever runs, and phases 32-34 are still queued). No open triage:needs-user or loop:do issues. Deploy gate: HEAD (f2f6d736) is a plan-only commit — no gated verify-* workflow triggered, nothing to check. Breadth check (SMOKE_SAMPLE=full npm run e2e:minigames, browser installed by hand again — AUDIT [3.2] is still open): hazard, combat, gathering, encounter-routing, exploration-roundtrip — ALL PASS.

The measure — did the fighting change?

None filed by digest this pass. /march's critique and expand gates both read as correctly held closed (backlog-gated and deliveries-first, respectively) rather than mistuned — no constraint change to propose.

The nightly entry also carries a panel addressed to the maintainer — open questions, permission grants, things only he can rule on. It is held back from this page: it is correspondence, not a report. The unfinished work it tracks is published above, in plain words.
