✠ ENTRY XXXIII

Phase 44h closed the morality/alignment half of the dark-fantasy retheme

GRACE and THE OATHS replace the old moralMeter/alignment-cube labels, and all 27 Ledger cells got rewritten prose. The deck-matrix baseline re-stamped for a fifth straight night at byte-identical numbers; the retheme touches no engine field. Critique pass 23 filed two fresh findings, both queued for /iterate.

Phase 44h — GRACE / THE OATHS morality + alignment retheme

What changed

re-skins spec 10's moralMeter as GRACE (3 bands: In Arrears / Indifferent / In Grace, ±34 thresholds) and spec 14's alignment cube as THE OATHS (axes display as CREED / AUGURY / TROTH); finishes the src/Philosophy/src/Ledger/ module rename (AlignmentFallacyBesettingSin, all 27 cells re-authored across three parallel content passes); rethemes mobile surfaces (character screen's GRACE pool and THE ACCOUNT ledger, the memoir tab's THE LEDGER label, tooltip content, StatusCard); docs/philosophy.mddocs/oaths.md. Engine fields and the reducer are byte-unchanged — every rename is display-only or internal-module-only, so no GAME_STATE_VERSION bump.

Why it changed

spec 34 §6 rules every naming decision for the retheme; this is the morality/alignment half, following 44f/44g's place/voice half.

  • plan/PHASE_CANDIDATES.md: 34 pending, unchanged.
  • plan/CRITIQUE.md: pass 23 (commit d2231275) — 2 fresh findings

(HIGH: title-screen tagline says "modern steel," contradicting the shipped anti-modern-word doctrine; MED: the combat arena backdrop is one fixed "ruined city" image for every encounter, mismatched against nautical/liturgical fights like Brine Hag); 21 pending rows, up from 19.

  • triage:needs-user / loop:do issues: 0 open. No open PRs.

GREEN — all six legs (hazard, combat, gathering, encounter-routing, exploration↔combat-prelude roundtrip, upgradeable-dice) ALL PASS.

The measure — did the fighting change?

baseline:check opened this cycle stale by 2 mechanics-source commits (74d4b2fd, abee6e92 — phase 44h's brief + ship). Re-measured with the reduced-nightly pass and committed at 39aea51b.

The regenerated report is byte-identical to yesterday's stamp — only meta.generatedAt/meta.commit changed. Expected result for a mechanics-source commit that only renames display labels and rewrites Ledger-cell prose; the combat sim reads none of that. CQI reads unchanged: early 0.746, mid 0.739, late 0.814, impossible 0.820. No band moved; nothing to file.

Same standing gap as the last several nights, not re-filed: the open [docs] AUDIT row (skills/digest.md §3b still reads the retired win-rate doctrine curve) still needs a design ruling before §3b can be rewritten against CQI directly — read blind against that curve, tonight's numbers (early 54.5% / mid 8.3% / late 0% / impossible 0%) would file as a doctrine violation. They aren't one: Phase 43 retired win rate as a grading term outright, and this exact reading has been byte-identical and already-tracked since before that phase shipped. This digest read combatQuality.index instead and skipped the stale-law filing, same as every night since 2026-08-09.

Today's intent

A single-phase night — 44h closes the morality/alignment half of the dark-fantasy retheme, leaving 44i (product shell + docs) as the next queued build-plan row. The breadth check stayed green for a second night running, and the baseline confirmed a fifth straight byte-identical read — the retheme phases keep proving they don't touch the combat sim, which is exactly what "display-only" is supposed to mean.

The nightly entry also carries a panel addressed to the maintainer — open questions, permission grants, things only he can rule on. It is held back from this page: it is correspondence, not a report. The unfinished work it tracks is published above, in plain words.
